what's your daily 5?

Every fall for the past 30 years, my wife Dawn and I have traveled to Northern Michigan to spend time on Mackinac Island.  We love the opportunity to leave the stress behind, embrace the simplicity of life and explore the island on foot and by bike.  It seems unbelievable, but every year we have discovered and experienced something new and different about the island.  One of our favorite things to do is to stop at Doud’s General Store and order some deli sandwiches for a picnic lunch.

Doud’s is THE only store on the island that carries produce, canned goods, milk, meat, etc.  The store in Harrisonville in the middle of the island has some provisions, but mostly the basic needs for the large amount of inhabitants who live on the island year round.

Doud’s has recently undergone a renovation and as I was waiting for my sandwiches to be made, I noticed a sign in the preparation area behind the counter titled Doud’s Daily 5.  The simplicity of the list helped focus the prep workers on what was essential; a commitment to Doud’s values and beliefs! Here it is!

Doud’s Daily 5
  1. Customer 1st!
  2. Make someone smile!
  3. Think it through!
  4. Find a solution!
  5. Clean as you go!

As I read over the Daily 5 as listed, I thought to myself how empowering this was to those in service to others.  As a committed group, they had determined what was most important about the work they were producing.  Focus on the customer, make their day, think through problems, find solutions, and keep your area clean!  I instantly thought of our work as leaders of people and wondered if I were to write them, what would the Daily 5 for my school be?

Here is what I came up with if I had an opportunity to share a Daily 5 list with my school family:

 Early Elementary School’s Daily 5
  1. Kids 1st!
  2. Make someone laugh!
  3. Trust and listen to your heart!
  4. Focus on solutions!
  5. Make a difference each day!

Of course, the implementation of this would require the opportunity for those involved to participate in crafting this Daily 5 as it related to what was valued and most important to each and every person in our school family.  It would be important for me as the leader to live and breathe the Daily 5 and to constantly remind others of our values and beliefs.

As I was reflecting on this article, I thought about New Year’s Resolutions and decided that I would create my own personal Daily 5!  Here it is!

Derek’s Daily 5
1.Live in the moment!
2.Always be positive!
3.Spread gratitude!
4.Take risks!
5.Reflect on learning!

I made my own Daily 5 sign and have it posted in my office.  I wrote them on a post-it™ and taped it to my bathroom mirror as a daily reminder.  As my support partners, you can ask me later this year how it is going!  I may need to reflect at the end of each month and revise my list if necessary!

If you created a Daily 5 list for your school that established an essential list of values and beliefs, what would it be?  If you created your own personal Daily 5 list to keep you grounded, motivated, present, and focused, what would it be?  If you create one, please share it with me at derekwheaton@gmail.com!

My friend, mentor, and co-facilitator of Leadership Matters Debbie McFalone gave me a wonderful gift of a book titled May You Live A Life You Love by M.H. Clark.  Each page of the book is filled with an inspirational quote that leads to reflection to help live each and every moment of this life we have been blessed with to the fullest.  Need some inspiration to develop your personal Daily 5 list?  Check this out!

Take Your Life and Live it Well
Be kind to yourself.  Dream great dreams.  Listen to your heart.  Celebrate your strengths.  Appreciate your talents.  Delight in your own uniqueness.  Find time for joy.  Give of yourself.  Lean into the hard work.  Seize new opportunities.  Find wonder!

Happy New School Year!  May you find ways to live your values and beliefs each and every day!  What’s your Daily 5?
