2017 is a big year for the Wheaton family! Both of my kids are getting married next year. My son Stuart in May and my daughter Carly in October. On top of that, my wife Dawn and I are celebrating our 30th Wedding Anniversary in August! Exciting times ahead!
In preparation for these wonderful events, Dawn and I have been taking dance lessons on Wednesday evenings for our date night. Although I am known to get down and boogie on the dance floor, the sophistication and nuance of ballroom type dancing aka “Dancing With the Stars” is not in my wheelhouse. I have been humbled as I learn to move my feet to swing, rumba, cha cha, and foxtrot.
Our dance teacher Jill is fabulous. I am struck by her ability to break moves down and explain them with incredible detail. She demonstrates a perfect mix of modeling, practicing, checking for understanding, and correcting as needed by reteaching and having us practice once again. She is always open to our questions and does a great job of providing the relevance regarding where the body is positioned and how it is supposed to move during each style of dance.
I have found that ballroom type dancing is well, sorry ladies, all about the man! He must lead with determination, confidence, and bravado. All while, gently leading his lady with moves that don’t push, pull or God forbid, step on her feet! The lady’s job is to follow the man’s lead and go where he takes her. The beauty here is that although the man is the leader, it is not about him, but how he best positions his lady and presents her in the most beautiful light! So, I admit, it isn’t all about the man, but all about the woman!
What does this have to do with Leadership Matters? Well, just ask the over 150 principals who have taken Leadership Matters and participated in the yearlong cohort class! Being a new early career principal and even a career veteran principal can bring unease, lack of confidence, and uncertainty as to what is expected. The principalship is no longer about just the four B’s-buildings, boilers, buses, and books but about instructional leadership. Leadership Matters ensures that you learn the skills and strategies necessary to lead with intention, courage, and confidence! You get support through monthly coaching calls and have a cohort of principals from across the state to support you and help you through any situation you might encounter.
You see, with a little instruction, guided practice, modeling, and help I am becoming more confident as a ball room dancer and my hope is that Dawn and I will kill it on the dance floor at our kids’ weddings.
Isn’t that what you want to do as a learning leader? All of us got the keys to our buildings after we were named the principal and thought to ourselves, “I have no clue what I am supposed to do.” College courses and programs didn’t prepare us for the work that entails the work of a principal. Leadership Matters fills in the gaps. It teaches you how to dance and lead with grace and style!
Here are some quotes from our most recent cohort of Leadership Matters Cohort 7! Neither Debbie or I could say anything more than what these participants speak of. So, if you are a principal who wants to lead with confidence, bravado, and put your school in its best light, then grab a partner and sign up to learn how to do the leadership dance today! Leadership Matters Cohort 8 starts in January 2017! Here is the link: Leadership Matters Cohort 8 registration Hurry and register today!
